What exactly is a Hot Tub Pressure Switch?

A pressure switch is a safety device located on or near the heater housing of your hot tub. Its main job is to verify that water is flowing properly through the heater before allowing the heater to turn on.

If there’s not enough water flow, the heater could overheat and become damaged. The pressure switch helps prevent that by stopping power to the heater when flow is inadequate.

How a Pressure Switch Works

A hot tub’s pump pushes water through the plumbing and heater. As water moves through the heater tube, it creates pressure. The pressure switch monitors this change and “opens” or “closes” based on flow conditions.

When Flow Is Good:

* The pressure switch senses adequate pressure.

* The switch closes, allowing power to reach the heater.

* The hot tub heats normally.

When Flow Is Low or Blocked:

* The pressure switch senses too little pressure.

* The switch does not close, preventing power reaching the heater element.

* The spa will not heat until proper flow is restored.

This system ensures the heater only operates when there’s enough water moving through it a crucial safety feature.

​What Causes Low Pressure or Flow?

Since the pressure switch reacts to water movement, anything that restricts flow will prevent it from closing, Common causes include:

1. Dirty or Clogged Filters

A dirty filter is one of the most common pressure-switch-related heating issues.

2. Low Water Level

If the level drops below the skimmer or filter intake, the pump pulls air causing an airlock.

5. Blocked or Partially Closed Valves before or after the pump

Water must be able to move freely to the heater.

Common Symptoms of a Pressure Switch Issue

You may have a pressure switch problem if your hot tub shows:

* No heat

* Error codes like FLO, FL, FLO2, HL, or LF (depending on brand)

* Intermittent heating (works sometimes but not always)

Most of these symptoms point back to **poor water flow**, not necessarily a bad pressure switch.

Can a Pressure Switch Fail?

Yes—pressure switches can wear out over time or become stuck. They’re simple devices but exposed to constant heat, moisture, and pressure changes.

Signs of a failing switch include:

* Inconsistent readings

* Heater turning on/off unpredictably

* FLO-type errors even with clean filters and good flow

* No continuity when tested with a multimeter

​Can You Adjust a Pressure Switch?

Many older models include a small adjustment screw. For most homeowners, it’s best not to adjust it, because:

* Over-adjusting can override safety features

* Incorrect calibration may cause heater damage

* Newer hot tubs use **non-adjustable** switches by design

If you suspect it needs adjustment, replacement is usually the safer and easier choice.

How to Troubleshoot Pressure Switch Problems

1. Clean or Replace the Filters

This solves most flow-related issues.

2. Check the Water Level

Ensure it’s above all jets and suction points.

3. Bleed Any Airlocks

Usually done by loosening a union near the pump until water flows steadily.

4. Confirm All Valves around the pumps are Fully Open

5. If you see an flc error message, the switch is stuck in the closed position (even with no water pressure). It will need replacement. 

If the heater still won’t run and flow is clearly good, the pressure switch may need replacement.

Replacing a Pressure Switch

Most pressure switches are simple to replace and cost anywhere from **$20–$40**, but the correct part must match your hot tub’s heater model.

Typical replacement steps:

1. Power off the spa at the breaker 

2. IMPORTANT! When you remove the switch, water will start coming out of the hole the switch threads into and possibly causing damage to electronics. To prevent this, close any valves around the pumps (if spa has no valves around the pump, you’ll have to drain the hot tub). Some spas have a small clear hose coming out of the pump. If yours does, you will want to crimp it closed.

2. Remove the old switch from the heater manifold

3. Install the new switch with proper sealing

4. Reconnect wires

5. Restore power and test
