Hot Tub Economy Mode

Hot Tub Economy Mode: What It Is, How It Works & When to Use It

If your hot tub display says “EC,” “Economy,” or “ECO Mode”, it doesn’t mean something is broken.

It means your spa is heating differently.

Economy mode reduces how often your heater runs — which lowers electricity usage but can also make your water temperature fluctuate more than normal.

Here’s exactly how it works, when to use it, and when you shouldn’t.

Please not that switching between economy, sleep and standard modes vary greatly between spa brands and models. It is best if you refer to your owner’s manual for instructions on how to change that are specific to your hot tub.

What Is Hot Tub Economy Mode?

Economy mode is an energy-saving setting that limits heating to programmed filter cycles.

In standard mode, your hot tub:

  • Monitors water temperature constantly
  • Turns the heater on anytime the temp drops

In economy mode, your hot tub:

  • Only checks and heats during scheduled filter cycles
  • May allow the water to cool between cycles

That’s the entire difference.

How Economy Mode Actually Works

Inside your spa pack, a temperature sensor monitors water temperature.

In Standard Mode, the heater can activate anytime.

In Economy Mode, the control board restricts heater operation to:

  • Filter cycle 1
  • Filter cycle 2 (if programmed)

If your filter runs twice a day for 2 hours each, your spa only has those 4 hours to heat.

That’s why temperature can drop overnight.

What Temperature Drop Is Normal?

In economy mode, a drop of:

  • 2–5°F overnight is common
  • More in very cold climates
  • More if your cover insulation is poor

If you’re losing 8–10°F or more, that’s usually:

  • A worn cover
  • Poor cabinet insulation
  • Wind exposure
  • Or very short filter cycles

When Should You Use Economy Mode?

Economy mode works best when:

✔ You don’t use the spa daily
✔ You’re away for a few days
✔ You want to reduce energy costs
✔ Outside temperatures are mild

It’s not ideal if:
✘ You soak every day
✘ You want instant 104°F water
✘ You live in very cold climates

How Much Money Does Economy Mode Save?

Savings depend on:

  • Climate
  • Insulation
  • Spa size
  • Filter cycle duration

On average, economy mode may reduce heating costs by:

  • 10–25% in moderate climates
  • Less in cold winter conditions

In very cold areas, sometimes standard mode is actually more efficient because reheating large temperature drops uses more power.

How to Turn Economy Mode On or Off

Most spas use one of these control systems:

  • Balboa Water Group
  • Gecko Alliance
  • Jacuzzi (proprietary systems)

Typically:

  1. Press “Mode” or “Temp”
  2. Scroll through:
    • Standard (STD)
    • Economy (EC)
    • Sleep (SLP)

If you’re unsure, check your spa manual or the model number inside the equipment bay.

Economy Mode vs Sleep Mode

Many people confuse these.

Economy Mode

  • Heats only during filter cycles
  • Tries to reach your set temperature

Sleep Mode

  • Heats only during filter cycles
  • Allows temperature to stay about 20°F below set temp

Sleep mode is for long-term vacation use.

Economy is for moderate savings.

Is Economy Mode Bad for Your Hot Tub?

No — it does not harm the heater or pump.

However:

  • Large temperature swings can increase condensation
  • Cold water can reduce sanitizer efficiency slightly
  • Frequent reheating may increase wear in extreme climates

In most cases, it’s completely safe.

Why Is My Hot Tub Not Heating in Economy Mode?

Common reasons:

  • Filter cycles too short
  • Water extremely cold
  • Dirty filter restricting flow
  • Heater element failing
  • Flow/pressure switch not closing

If it heats in standard mode but not economy, the issue is usually programming — not a broken heater.

Pro Tip From 20 Years in the Field

If a customer used their spa daily, I always recommended:

✔ Standard mode in winter
✔ Economy mode in spring/fall
✔ Sleep mode only for vacations (only during summer months)

The key isn’t just saving power — it’s avoiding big reheating swings.

Final Thoughts

Economy mode is not a problem setting.

It’s simply a controlled heating schedule.

If your water is cooler than expected, check:

  1. Filter cycle duration
  2. Outside temperature
  3. Cover condition
  4. Mode setting

Understanding the mode eliminates 90% of confusion.
