A hot tub pump that won’t start doesn’t necessarily mean the pump needs to be replaced.

One of the best diagnostic tools you have is something that doesn’t require a meter or any special equipment:

Your ears.

When I diagnose a hot tub pump that isn’t starting, I pay close attention to what happens when the pump is turned on.

A relay click followed by silence points me in a very different direction than a motor that hums for several seconds and clicks off.

And if the pump actually sounds like it’s running but there’s no water movement, the pump may have started perfectly well — the problem could be an air lock, closed valve, dirty filter or obstruction instead.

Before replacing anything, listen to what the pump is telling you.


Safety Stop

Hot tubs combine high-voltage electricity and water, so there are limits to what should be attempted as DIY troubleshooting.

Turn Off Power Before Touching the Pump

Shut off power to the hot tub at the breaker before:

  • Opening or disconnecting the pump
  • Reaching anywhere near the pump impeller
  • Removing electrical connections
  • Inspecting wiring
  • Removing or testing fuses
  • Attempting to rotate the motor manually
  • Loosening pump unions
  • Opening electrical equipment

Never put your fingers or tools inside a pump while electrical power is connected.

Don’t assume the pump is safe simply because it isn’t running or the topside control is turned off. Electrical power can still be present inside the spa.

Capacitors Require Special Caution

Pump capacitors can retain an electrical charge even after power to the hot tub has been disconnected.

Do not touch capacitor terminals, attempt to discharge a capacitor, test one or replace one unless you’re familiar with the appropriate electrical safety procedures.

If the diagnosis points toward a capacitor and you’re not trained or comfortable working with electrical equipment, have a qualified technician perform the repair.

When to Call a Technician

Stop DIY troubleshooting and call a qualified spa technician if:

  • You’re uncomfortable working around electricity
  • The pump hums but won’t start
  • You suspect a failed capacitor
  • The pump motor appears seized
  • A fuse repeatedly blows
  • Wiring or terminals are burned or melted
  • Water has entered electrical components
  • Voltage testing is required
  • The circuit board or relay requires diagnosis
  • The pump needs to be opened or disassembled
  • You’re unable to safely confirm that power has been disconnected

What Do You Hear?

Turn the pump on from the topside control and listen carefully.

CLICK — but the pump is silent

You may be hearing the circuit-board relay.

If the relay clicks but the pump itself makes absolutely no sound, the pump may not be receiving power.

Possible causes include:

  • Blown pump fuse
  • Wiring problem
  • Poor electrical connection
  • Circuit-board output problem

HUMMMMM… then CLICK

The pump is probably receiving power and attempting to start but can’t.

Possible causes include:

  • Bad capacitor
  • Seized pump motor
  • Mechanical obstruction
  • Internal motor problem

Don’t repeatedly try to restart the pump. A stalled motor can overheat.

Pump Sounds Like It’s Running — but There’s No Flow

The motor may have successfully started.

Now look for a circulation problem:

  • Air lock
  • Closed valve
  • Dirty or restricted filter
  • Plumbing restriction
  • Debris inside the pump

No Sound at All

Confirm that the spa has power and is actually commanding the pump to operate.

If the pump icon appears and you hear the relay click but nothing from the pump itself, follow the Hot Tub Pump Has No Power troubleshooting path.


Step 1: Confirm the Spa Is Calling for the Pump

Before diagnosing the pump itself, make sure the spa is operating normally.

Check:

  • Is the topside display illuminated?
  • Does the spa have power?
  • Does another pump operate?
  • Are there active error codes?
  • Is the breaker/GFCI on?

Now press the appropriate pump or jets button.

Watch the topside display.

Pump icon appears

The control system appears to recognize the request.

Now listen to the equipment area.

Pump icon doesn’t appear

The spa may not actually be commanding the pump to operate.

Possible causes include:

  • Operating mode
  • Pump settings
  • Active error condition
  • Topside control problem
  • Control-system problem

Don’t condemn the pump until you’ve established that the spa is actually telling it to run.


Step 2: Listen to the Pump

This is where I usually begin narrowing down the problem.

The important question isn’t simply:

“Does the pump work?”

It’s:

“What happens when the spa tries to start it?”


I Hear a Relay Click, but the Pump Is Silent

If the pump icon appears and I hear the circuit-board relay click, I know the control system is at least attempting to activate the pump.

If the pump itself remains completely silent, I start looking at the electrical path to the pump.

Possible causes include:

  • Blown pump fuse
  • Damaged wiring
  • Poor connection
  • Circuit-board output problem
  • Electrical failure within the pump

I Hear the Pump Hum and Then Click

This is a very different symptom.

A humming motor is likely receiving electrical power and trying to start.

Something is preventing it from actually turning.

A bad capacitor is one of the first things I suspect, but it’s not the only possibility.

Other causes include:

  • Seized motor
  • Failed bearings
  • Jammed impeller
  • Foreign object inside the pump
  • Internal motor failure
  • Incorrect electrical supply

Don’t Keep Trying to Start It

A motor that is energized but unable to turn can quickly become hot.

After several seconds you may hear a:

CLICK

That may be the motor’s thermal overload opening to protect it from overheating.

Stop repeatedly pressing the pump button and allow the motor to cool.


Technician Note: The Cool-Down Period Can Fool You

This is an important one.

Imagine the first time you activate the pump you hear:

HUMMMMM… → CLICK

The motor was clearly attempting to start.

But now the motor’s thermal overload has opened.

You press the pump button again a minute later.

This time you hear:

CLICK from the circuit board → silence.

That can look like a completely different problem.

You could easily start chasing a blown fuse or circuit-board problem because the pump now appears to have no power.

But the original symptom was still:

HUM → CLICK.

The motor simply hasn’t cooled enough for its thermal protection to reset.

That’s why, when diagnosing these pumps, I want to know:

What did the pump do the FIRST time you tried to start it?

Don’t let the cool-down period send you down the wrong troubleshooting path.


Step 3: Pump Sounds Like It’s Running but There’s No Water Flow

If the pump motor sounds like it’s running normally, we’ve learned something important:

The pump did start.

Now the problem is probably on the water side rather than the electrical starting side.

Work through these checks together.

Check the Pump Valves

Make sure the suction and return valves are completely open.

A closed or partially closed valve can prevent proper circulation even though the motor is running.

Pay particular attention to valve position if the spa was recently:

  • Serviced
  • Drained
  • Winterized
  • Refilled
  • Repaired
  • Had the pump replaced

A valve that was closed during service can simply have been forgotten.

Check for an Air Lock

Air can become trapped inside the pump or plumbing after the hot tub has been drained and refilled.

The motor may sound perfectly normal but fail to move water.

Air locks are especially worth considering after:

  • Draining and refilling
  • Pump replacement
  • Plumbing repairs
  • Winterization
  • Running the spa with insufficient water

If the pump ran normally before the spa was drained and won’t circulate after the refill, air lock moves very high on my list.

Follow the manufacturer’s recommended procedure for clearing an air lock.

If loosening a pump union is required, turn off power at the breaker first.

Check the Filter

A severely dirty or restricted filter can reduce water flow.

Inspect and clean the filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

If appropriate for that spa, the filter can also be temporarily removed as a diagnostic test.

If circulation returns with the filter removed, you’ve found a strong clue.

Don’t operate the hot tub without its filter as a permanent solution.

Look for Other Restrictions

If the valves are open, the pump isn’t air locked and the filter isn’t restricting flow, consider:

  • Blocked suction plumbing
  • Debris
  • Collapsed or restricted plumbing
  • Obstructed fittings
  • Something inside the pump

If you reach the point where the pump itself needs to be opened, shut off electrical power and consider having a technician perform the inspection.


Step 4: Check for Debris or a Jammed Pump

I’ve seen things find their way into hot tub pumps that definitely weren’t supposed to be there.

That includes:

  • Leaves
  • Pieces of plastic
  • Small toys or pieces of toys
  • Other debris

Foreign material can restrict the impeller or prevent it from rotating.

A jammed pump may produce the same hum → click symptom as a failed capacitor or seized motor.

Never Reach Into a Powered Pump

This deserves its own warning.

Turn off power at the breaker and verify that the spa is de-energized before putting fingers or tools anywhere near the pump.

A pump that isn’t currently moving can start unexpectedly if electrical power is still available.

If accessing the impeller requires pump disassembly, or you’re unsure how to safely inspect it, call a technician.


Step 5: Is the Pump Motor Seized?

If the pump hums but doesn’t rotate, the motor or pump assembly may be seized.

Possible causes include:

  • Failed bearings
  • Corrosion
  • Internal motor damage
  • Jammed impeller
  • Foreign object
  • Long periods without operation

Checking whether the shaft or impeller rotates freely must only be done with power completely disconnected and according to the manufacturer’s service procedures.

Never attempt to manually free a pump while electrical power is connected.


Step 6: Could It Be the Capacitor?

A failed capacitor is one of the common causes of a pump motor that:

HUMS → doesn’t start → CLICKS OFF

The capacitor helps the motor start and/or operate correctly.

If the capacitor fails, the motor may receive power but be unable to begin rotating.

However, this is where DIY troubleshooting should usually stop for an inexperienced person.

Capacitors can retain dangerous electrical energy even after the breaker has been turned off.

Don’t touch capacitor terminals or attempt to test, discharge or replace a capacitor unless you understand how to do so safely.

If the symptoms point toward a capacitor, have a qualified technician test the pump.

→ Stop repeatedly trying to start it
→ Suspect capacitor
→ Check for seized/jammed pump

Remember: After the overload opens, the motor may temporarily become silent while cooling.

MOTOR SOUNDS NORMAL — NO FLOW

→ Check valves
→ Check for air lock
→ Check filter
→ Check for restrictions
→ Check for debris

NOTHING

→ Confirm control command
→ Check spa power/control system


Most Common Causes of a Hot Tub Pump Not Starting

Blown Pump Fuse

More likely when the circuit-board relay clicks but the pump itself remains completely silent.

Bad Capacitor

One of the first suspects when the motor hums but can’t start.

Seized Pump Motor

The motor receives power but physically can’t rotate.

Debris or Jammed Impeller

Leaves, toy pieces or other foreign objects can sometimes enter the pump and interfere with the impeller.

Air Lock

The motor runs, but trapped air prevents proper circulation. Particularly common after draining and refilling.

Closed Valve

The pump runs but can’t move water through the plumbing.

Dirty Filter

A heavily restricted filter can significantly reduce circulation.

Electrical or Circuit-Board Problem

A fuse, wiring, relay or circuit-board problem can prevent power from reaching the pump.


Before You Replace the Pump

Don’t replace an expensive pump until you’ve answered a few questions.

  • Does the spa have power?
  • Does the pump icon appear?
  • Do you hear the relay click?
  • Does the motor hum?
  • Did it hum earlier but become silent afterward?
  • Does the motor sound like it’s actually running?
  • Are the valves open?
  • Was the spa recently drained or refilled?
  • Have you checked for an air lock?
  • Is the filter restricted?
  • Could debris be preventing the pump from turning?

Those answers can separate a bad pump from a much simpler problem.


When to Book Service

Have the hot tub professionally diagnosed if:

  • The pump repeatedly hums but won’t start
  • You suspect a capacitor problem
  • The pump appears seized
  • A fuse repeatedly blows
  • Energized voltage testing is required
  • Circuit-board or relay testing is necessary
  • Wiring or terminals are burned or melted
  • Water is present around electrical components
  • The pump needs to be disassembled
  • An obstruction can’t be safely removed
  • You’re unsure how to completely disconnect power
  • You’re uncomfortable performing any part of the diagnosis

Service Call Prep

Before contacting a technician, make a note of:

  • Whether the spa has power
  • Whether another pump works
  • Whether the pump icon appears
  • What the pump did the first time it failed
  • Whether you heard a relay click
  • Whether the motor hummed
  • Whether it hummed and then clicked
  • Whether it became silent afterward
  • Whether the motor sounds like it’s running
  • Whether there is water flow
  • Whether the spa was recently drained or refilled
  • Whether the valves are open
  • Whether removing/cleaning the filter changed anything

If the problem is intermittent, a short video recording the sound from a safe distance can be very useful to a technician.


Why Listening to the Pump Works

The sounds tell us how far the pump made it through the starting process.

Relay click:
The control system appears to be trying to activate the pump.

Motor hum:
The motor is probably receiving power and attempting to start.

Motor running normally:
The motor successfully started, so look toward the water side — air lock, valves, filter or another restriction.

Hum followed by a click:
The motor may have stalled until its thermal overload opened.

And that final symptom can change with time.

Once the overload opens, a pump that originally hummed and clicked may temporarily produce no motor sound at all.

That’s why I don’t diagnose a pump based only on what it’s doing at one particular moment.

Listen to the sequence — especially what happened the first time the pump tried to start.
